Author | DIAKADI Trainer Rachel Stallman Rachel Stallman is both a Certified Personal Trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and a Certified Teacher of the Alexander Technique.

The Alexander Technique is a hundred-year-old method of neuromuscular education that can be applied to any activity. It is widely known among performing artists as a discipline to enhance performance quality. Working from the inherently intelligent design of the human body, Alexander Technique lessons promote fluid, efficient movement and unrestricted breathing.

The Technique can get beyond symptoms to the root of musculoskeletal problems caused by unhealthy movement patterns. For this reason, many people have found the Alexander Technique tremendously helpful for relieving excess back and neck tension and Repetitive Stress Injuries. Rachel offers both traditional lessons in the Alexander Technique as well as personal training. Her training style incorporates elements of the Alexander Technique such as creative cues to enhance physical awareness and gentle hands-on manipulations to decompress the spine.

Rachel is a native San Franciscan, but, until recently, lived most of her adult life in New York City.  Rachel has an extensive background in dance, martial arts (Capoeira and Kung Fu) and yoga.  Some of her favorite physical pursuits are hiking, swimming, half-marathons, Pilates, strength training and salsa dancing.  Rachel became motivated to complete the 3-year, 1600-hour professional teacher training in the Alexander Technique after a series of lessons got to the root of the knee tendonitis she had developed over years in martial arts.

She completed her training and was certified by the Society for Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) in 2006. Rachel has taught Alexander Technique workshops in the Dance Science Department at Laban Conservatory for Dance in London, St. George’s Hospital in London, the Graduate Acting Department at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and HB Studios Summer Intensive for Actors in New York.

Rachel became certified as a personal trainer by NASM in 2007 and trained clients both at the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers in New York City and privately.  She has completed over 40 credits in health and science courses at Hunter College and did a year-long internship at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in outpatient sports and dance physical therapy and on the inpatient orthopedic floor.
