Commit to Fit | Week 1

First, a note. If I was writing tomorrow morning instead of tonight, this blog entry would read “HOLY #*$@^# WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY QUADS, BILLY?” But I’m writing it tonight, mere hours after a great afternoon of squats, lunges and step-ups, so I’m not yet in agony, just enjoying the delight of working hard and starting to get in shape.

Hi. I’m Judith, and I’m utterly thrilled to be the lucky recipient of the generous Commit to Fit program from DIAKADI and MV Nutrition for 2013. I’ll be blogging for the next year about the work I’m doing with Billy and Sarah and the team of amazing people who are going to help me change my life, and I look forward to sharing all of this as we proceed.

A little bit of background: I’m 42 and a new single mom to a six month old boy. Being a parent is more wonderful than I could have imagined, and about as exhausting as you’d expect. My son is already an energetic and exuberant little guy, and sometime in the next few months he’ll start walking, then running, then leaping around a playground. I’m hoping that this year gets me in shape to keep up with him.

More importantly, I’m hoping this year kicks off a long arc of health for the rest of my life. Until I became a parent, the concept of “longevity” was somewhat abstract to me, but now it means living to see my son grow old. When people ask me what my fitness goals are, I say “I want to live till my son’s 100th birthday.”

Turns out that this is a powerful motivator. In the past, I’ve tried all kinds of fitness programs and never had much success - investing time and energy and commitment into taking care of myself was less interesting than work, or art projects, or seeing friends, or any of a number of other distractions. But as my life transformed over the past year and I became a parent, my priorities shifted and I now believe that taking care of my family — starting with myself — is the most important thing I can do with my time and energy.

My friend Dave McKew had amazing success with the Commit to Fit program two years ago, and he encouraged me to apply this year. As I watched him transform his life and maintain that transformation, it seemed clear to me that this program has a remarkable team of people behind it. I realized I’d never find a better opportunity to learn new skills and develop new patterns at a time when I was so ready to do it, and I sent in my application.

In the first week, I’ve learned a number of things about myself, and realized I had a lot of outdated ideas about fitness, nutrition and health. I learned that what I thought was an ideal body size for me was based on a one-size-fits-all BMI chart that doesn’t accurately reflect my body composition. I learned that I have pretty good form for a lot of exercises that I tried, and that some of the things I thought were bad habits were not bad at all (apparently your feet don’t need to be perfectly parallel to do squats!). I am excited to see what I learn in Weeks 2 - 52. Stay tuned!
