But as we all know, just dreaming isn’t enough. You need to get out there and do something about it. You need to set goals and objectives, carry out the research, create a plan, set timelines – the strategies for making this happen are infinite.
Why is it then, that some dreams come true while others don’t? The answer lies in a simple 3 letter word.
You can have all the best intentions and be the smartest, most hardworking person but if you don’t know WHY you are doing what you are doing – you may never achieve your dream. And the WHY cannot be profit. Profit is a result. Not a cause to believe in.
Simon Sinek author of the book ‘Start with Why’ is best known for popularizing the concept of The Golden Circle. He explains that most businesses today have a three prong approach to making a sales pitch. They tell you WHAT they do, sometimes they tell you HOW they do it (proprietary process) and if you’re lucky, they’ll tell you WHY. Take for example this marketing message:
We make great computers. They’re beautifully designed, simple to use and user friendly - Wanna buy one?
This is how most companies sell to us. They start off with WHAT they do (make computers), HOW they are better (beautifully designed) and then a call to action – no WHY provided. Apple, on the other hand, communicates differently. They start with WHY. Let’s look at how they do it.
Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo. The way we do that is by making our products beautifully designed, simple to use and user-friendly. And we happen to make great computers - Wanna buy one?
Simon’s conclusion? ‘People don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it’. Apple so clearly communicates their vision, values and beliefs and as a result attracts customers with similar visions, values and beliefs. It’s why we are ready to buy anything that Apple produces…not just computers.
Reading about this got me thinking. If we can apply this concept to businesses and use it to explain why some are successful and others aren’t, surely, we can apply this to our own goals and dreams! If you set a big goal for yourself – whether it’s to find your dream job, write a book or travel the world but you don’t know WHY you want to achieve the goal, how can you be inspired and motivated to see it through? How will you want to ‘buy’ into it?
Anyone that has worked hard towards an achievement of a goal or dream knows that there are major pitfalls that come along the way. Events and situations that can derail you and end the pursuit of the goal. It is in those intense, testing times that you need to draw on your inner motivation. WHY are you going for the goal in the first place?
It’s been said that a person with a big enough “why” can bear almost any “what” or “how.” When your “why” is big enough, you find a way to reach your targets, even if you have to struggle and try many different things to get there.
So as you go through the following weeks and months, working towards the dreams and goals that you set for yourself this year, make sure you know your WHY. It could make all the difference.
