Been working on a goal lately? Feeling a little (or a LOT) anxious? Trust me. We've all been there. Turns out, there is a root cause to our anxiety.
It's being tied to a specific outcome.
Say for example, you’ve set a goal to lose 20 pounds in 3 months. You have hired a fabulous Diakadi trainer, you’ve researched all the nutrition info, you have an action plan – but you’re still freaking out!
It’s because you are tied to ONE outcome. The only acceptable one to you. You kick major ass - lose the 20lbs and it all happens in less than 3 months!
I totally agree that that would be a fabulous outcome. The thing is though, no matter how hard you work or how much time you put into it, you cannot guarantee the result. A number of things could come in the way – your schedule could change due to work, travel or even an illness.
Want another truth?
If your desired outcome doesn't happen - YOU WILL BE OKAY.
Of course it would be awful to not make the goal that you set out for yourself- you're awesome right? But it doesn't change the fact that in the moment that you are working on it, you cannot control or guarantee how it's going to go.
Lesson? Stop focusing on the outcome.
What should you do instead?
Focus on the 2 things that you can control:
- The reason WHY you are going for it.
- Whether the goal is in line with your values and beliefs
As I wrote in 'Do you know WHY?' a couple of weeks ago, a person with a big enough WHY can overcome almost any 'what' or 'how'. Make sure you clearly understand why you are doing it. What drives you to do it? What is the bigger purpose behind it?
In our weight loss goal example, maybe your WHY is because you want look great in the bikini you just bought for your summer vacation. What drives you is your desire to feel sexy again inside and out!
How does it line up with your values and beliefs? At your core, you believe in living a healthy life. You believe in challenging yourself. You don’t want to look good just for the summer, you want to feel good for LIFE!
The point is this. When you redefine success to mean going for what you want, irrespective of any outcome, you feel less anxious. AWESOME is going for something just for the sake of it. Just showing up and committing to working out and eating right is a win on it’s own. You’re setting up great habits for life and it’s only a matter of time before it all pays off.
So move forward. Go work on those big goals and dreams. And don't worry about the result. You know your WHY. You know what you BELIEVE. That's all you can control. That's all that matters.
