Being active was something that was bred into me from a very young age. Growing up in a very small town, Naples, in upstate western NY I spent a lot of time playing outside and being part of different sports teams all throughout my youth. I played basketball and soccer beginning in elementary school all through middle and high school. Heading to college in 2001, I knew I wanted to continue competitive athletics and, naturally, thought that would be with one of my existing pursuits. However, at just under 6 feet tall with an athletic build, I caught the eye of the rowing coach walking across campus one day; he stopped me and said that I had to come out for the team. I contemplated his proposition for a couple days and decided to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. I had no idea, at the time, that this decision would have such a significant influence on my life path. Fast forward nine years; in 2010 I made my first of what would be seven consecutive United States Women’s National Rowing team appearances. During my tenure on the team I won five world championship titles and two Olympic Gold Medals (London 2012, Rio 2016) in the Women’s 8+.
My journey thus far was not without setbacks; I was cut on 3 separate occasions before I finally made my first US National team. My persistence, tenacity and desire to keep striving towards my goal is what kept me going. These strengths have also served me well in overcoming some personal challenges in my life, including an eating disorder, the unexpected early death of my father as well as depression and anxiety and ongoing body image issues.
Total health and wellness is not just about reps in the gym; it encompasses nutrition, rest, recovery and mindset. I am a believer in the notion that the brain is a muscle that needs training. Optimism conditioning, emotional agility and mental toughness can be developed. My experience training at the elite level combined with my ongoing work at a Peak Performance consulting company allows me to help guide you on your path. I have a passion for total health and wellness. This passion combined with my life experiences is what continues to fuel me and is what motivates me to help others reach their own health & wellness goals; I do not ever give up and I will never give up on you.
